As a trout angler, you may have wondered what exaclty is going on underwater when a trout takes your presentation. Understanding what is going on under the water can allow you to make better presentations, and better time your hooksets to improve your hook up rate. Underwater videos of trout feeding are surprisingly few and far in between compared to the numbers of underwater videos for bass or pike for example. I took the time to collect the few videos I could find here.
This video contains some fantastic footage of trout hitting both subsurface streamer flies and dry flies being trolled. The guy isn’t a natural fly angler, but the video still contains some very useful footage.
This video gives a brief look at a rainbow trout taking a dry fly from the surface. The rest of the video is the angler fighting the trout. The trout takes the fly just after the 0:28 second mark.
There are two cool parts to this video. It starts off showing a brook trout holding tight to a rock. A brown trout then comes and forces the brookie out of it’s holding spot! Near the end of the video, it’s slowed down so you can see the brown trout take a nymph.
A video showing golden trout grabbing a nymph fly subsurface.
This video shows trout holing a few feet below the surface as they feed on naturals above them.
This video isn’t actually under water, but it’s amazing footage all the same. It shows some big brown trout grabbing dragonflies out of the air. There’s also footage of a big brown taking a dragonfly dry fly near the end of the video.
A video of small trout taking a dry fly.
This video doesn’t show the trout actually taking the fly. The video does however show how the trout leaves it’s feeding lane to take the fly, and then promptly returns to the same spot after grabbing a mayfly.
A great video of a variety of underwater trout behaviour. From feeding, spawning, and fighting.
Part 2 of the above video
If you buy anything below, I get a bit of beer money (commission).
A crystal clear view of trout sipping natural flies at the surface.
This is a video of a small trout taking a plastic worm presentation by a spin angler. The presantion could be done exactly the same with a san juan worm or other worm pattern if you were fly fishing.
This is some very clear footage of ice fishing for brook trout. It’s a good video to watch and learn how brook trout may react to different presentations underwater.
